In my late twenties, I worked the worst job I’ve ever had. The duties weren’t the nightmare; the people in charge were. Management was dishonest, blatantly sexist, short-tempered and happy to underpay its hardest workers.
At the end of a first quarter, we had an all-hands meeting. Our CEO paced in front of a large projection of a graph, house music booming to pump us up. His goal was to, without question, motivate us to work harder, excite us: the company was making big deals, doing big things. “You are part of an amazing team! Now’s the time to Give it. Your. All!” He wrapped up his spiel, signaling for his employees to hoot and holler. So we did. Then, one hairy hand shot up in the crowd.
Our CEO spotted him, “Yes! Tom.”
Tom dropped his arm, “So when are we all getting paid more?”
